Carolina Beach looking for alternate sites for dredging spoils
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Carolina Beach has its hands tied with the lake dredging project.
The problem now is finding a place to dump the dirt pulled from the lake bottom.
The town was placing the spoils on property at the wastewater treatment plant it leases from the U.S. Army, but the Army told the town to stop because it was being dumped in the wrong spot.
The town thought it had a place to get rid of the dirt, but the mayor says the owner backed out after questions about the arsenic level in the dredged material.
The town is looking for a permitted state and federally legal upland site to deposit the sediment. It has been scouting properties south of Monkey Junction.
