LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Leland is calling on community members to roll up their sleeves and give back during its annual Lend a Hand community service event on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The event, scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, offers volunteers the opportunity to participate in one of six service projects focused on environmental stewardship, beautification, food assistance and community planning.

The day begins at 8 a.m. at Founders Park, located at 113 Town Hall Drive, where volunteers will check in, enjoy light refreshments and learn more about the organizations they will be supporting. Participants will then head to their assigned project sites at 9 a.m.

“Lend a Hand” was created to foster civic pride and strengthen community connections by bringing residents of all ages together to address local needs through volunteer service.

This year’s volunteer opportunities include:

  • Stream Cleanup: Kayak with Cape Fear River Watch to collect water samples and remove litter along the Cypress Cove Park watershed.
  • Trash Pickup: Help We Live Here remove roadside litter in the Westgate District.
  • Tree Planting: Join the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees to plant trees and enhance the Westgate District.
  • Food Distribution: Assist First Baptist Church of Leland with its drive-thru food bank.
  • Food Drive: Collect donations to support future food distributions through First Baptist Church of Leland.
  • Walk Audit: Participate in an AARP-led walk audit to help identify future improvements along Village Road.

Town officials encourage residents of all ages to get involved, but participants must register in advance.

Since launching in 2023, Lend a Hand has brought together 444 volunteers, who have completed 19 community projects benefiting eight local organizations.

More information about each volunteer opportunity and registration is available on the Town of Leland’s website.
