Trooper injured when driver pulls into path of patrol vehicle

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A trooper based in Brunswick County is recovering after a driver pulled out in front of his patrol car, causing a collision.

It happened on US Highway 17 Thursday just after 12:15 a.m., troopers said. Lt. Jeff Gordon said the driver was heading south, attempted to make a U-turn after the intersection for NC-87, and hit the trooper’s vehicle.

Troopers said the driver, who has not been identified, was driving a Chrysler 300 sedan. Both the Chrysler and the trooper’s vehicle ended up in the shoulders of the opposite lanes of the highway. Troopers said the Chrysler driver failed to yield the right of way and made the U-turn.

Both the driver of the Chrysler and trooper were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The trooper has since been released. The driver of the Chrysler remains at the hospital.

Alcohol is suspected in this collision and charges are expected in this collision, Lt. Gordon said.
