TSA: Grenades, snakes found in screenings

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington International Airport security is preparing for the traveling season.

At a media event today a spokeswoman with Transportation Security Administration displayed dozens of items that are abandoned from ILM travelers. The airport also offers a pre-check program that allows you to use quicker screening lanes when you fly.

Spokeswoman Sari Koshetz says among dozens of weapons and tools, there is one item that is never allowed on a plane.

“You absolutely cannot have a grenade – fake or real – on an airplane either in the cabin or in the belly of the plane,” Koshetz said. “We see them quite often. Somewhere, someplace across the country every week, someone brings a grenade – real or fake.”

Koshetz says they also see people try to bring animals on board.

“We’ve had people who have had turtles and birds strapped to their body. We have actually had a woman who had a snake inside of her underwear.”
