Two killed in Pender County crash
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two people are dead after a crash involving a box truck this morning.
It happened around 4:30 a.m on NC 53, about two miles west of NC 50 and Maple Hill.
First Sgt. CK Parks says a 2006 Black Acura SUV was heading east and crossed the center line and hit a box truck that was traveling in the opposite direction.
Two people inside the Acura were pronounced dead at the scene.
There was an infant in the backseat of the Acura. EMS took the child to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The baby was not injured. Parks says the child safety seat likely saved the baby’s life.
The driver of the box truck did not get hurt.
Parks says alcohol was not a factor and everyone was wearing seat belts. Parks says the preliminary investigation shows no signs of distracted driving.
A gas tank on the truck ruptured, which caused a small diesel spill. Parks estimates less than 50 gallons leaked out of the tank. Hazmat responded because there’s a nearby creek that leads to the river.
The team contained the spill and cleaned it up.
The victims are from Atlanta, Georgia. Their names have not been released, because investigators are having a difficult time locating the next of kin.
The crash shut down that section of the highway until around 10:00 a.m.
