UNC academic fraud not mainly for athletes

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — A consultant who looked again at data collected during an academic fraud investigation is sticking with the earlier conclusion that athletes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill were not the main beneficiaries.

A report issued Friday came as a panel of the state university system’s governors met to continue to look into the athletic and academic scandal that led to Chancellor Holden Thorp’s resignation and football coach Butch Davis’s departure.

The report says there’s no evidence student athletes gained more than others from dozens of courses in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies where instructors did not teach, grades were changed, and grade reports were faked over more than a decade.

Those conclusions back up last month’s report by former Gov. Jim Martin’s investigation.
