UNCW chancellor to take time off for surgery

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington will take a few weeks off starting Monday because of upcoming surgery.

Chancellor Jose “Vito” Sartarelli sent a statement to the campus community saying he will have bypass surgery and needs to recover after. Provost Marilyn Sheerer will take over leadership of the university during his time away.

The email sent to students reads in full:

Dear Campus Community:

I wanted you to communicate with you directly before you heard this update secondhand.

I will be out of the office for a few weeks beginning Monday, January 29, to address a health issue. I expect to have bypass surgery next week and will be home recovering shortly thereafter. I have discussed this with my leadership team to ensure my absence won’t interfere with any ongoing or upcoming projects; Provost Sheerer will be stepping in as of Monday and will have my full authority on all matters affecting our campus.

I will be in constant contact with the provost and others while I am out, and I look forward to putting this behind me and getting back to work as soon as I can. In the meantime, I know you all will forge ahead with the same enthusiasm and spirit we have always had as Seahawks, and I will be cheering you along from home as we continue to make great progress toward our collective goals. Thank you in advance for your cooperation during my brief absence.
Sincerely,
Chancellor Sartarelli
