UNCW welcomes humanoid robot to expand hands-on robotics education
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The university’s first humanoid robot, purchased in April for roughly $60,000, can walk, manipulate objects and even blow kisses.
Students are using the robot to learn about artificial intelligence, human-robot interaction and advanced robotics. Over the summer, they programmed it to walk and perform basic tasks.
UNCW says the goal is not only to give students hands-on experience with emerging technology, but also to grow its robotics program and prepare students for careers in fields like healthcare, manufacturing and assistive technology.
The university is also letting students vote on a name for the robot, which will be revealed during a basketball game.
