WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The UNCW Yacht Club will host a free community event Monday, Oct. 26, aimed at helping residents and students better understand water safety and how to respond during emergencies.

Water Safety Night will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 105 of Cameron Hall at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, located at 601 S. College Road.

UNCW women’s basketball head coach Nicole Woods will speak about her personal experience as a drowning survivor.

The event will also feature The Qualified Captain, which will provide information about rip currents, safe practices on the water and steps to take during an emergency.

Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue will provide water safety materials for attendees.

Organizers say the event is designed to help students and community members become more prepared for emergencies, particularly in a coastal region where boating, swimming and other water activities are common.

Free pizza from Wrightsville Beach Brewery will be available while supplies last.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in a raffle featuring two Sea Tow memberships, a Wrightsville Beach Brewery hat, Onslow Bay Boatworks apparel and a free semester membership to the UNCW Yacht Club.

The event is free and open to the public.

Those interested in attending can RSVP online through Eventbrite.
