Untreated wastewater spills in Brunswick County

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) – Around 10,000 gallons of untreated wastewater discharged from a sewer main in Shallotte.

Brunswick County Public Utilities says it happened yesterday at 301 Forest Street Ext. NW.

Officials say a joint gasket failure caused the discharge.

County personnel isolated the sewer spill and removed the wastewater from the street and applied lime to stabilize the area.

An unknown amount of sewage reached the waters of Mulberry Branch and testing will be done to determine the impact.
