Update: Boiling Spring Lakes shooting was self-defense
BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WWAY) – A shooting that sent one man to the hospital last week has been ruled self-defense.
According to Boiling Spring Lakes police, William Christman, 28, of South Carolina, was with a group of hunters looking for a hunting dog using a GPS device, which had identified the area of Bet Lane as the last location of the dog.
Police say Christman, along with two other hunters, went to 29 Bet Lane to ask if anyone at the home had seen their dog. Police say the resident, James Harold Stephens, 49, confronted the group and told them to leave and look for the dog in the roadway.
Police say after Christman and the other went to the road, Stephens drove to the end of his driveway armed with a gun and began pointing it at the hunters who were looking for the dog.
Police say Christman shot Stephens after he pointed a gun at him.
Police expect to file charges against Stephens in the future.
