UPDATE: Escaped Brunswick County inmate identified

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — Deputies in Brunswick County are searching for an inmate who escaped from jail by posing as another inmate, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman says.

The inmate is identified as William Earl Hewett, 22, of Southport. He was in jail on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, communicating threats and several counts of failure to appear. He was booked into the jail January 21.

Sheriff John Ingram tells WWAY it is believed that a relative of Hewett was also in jail and scheduled to post bond Thursday. He says Hewett switched armbands with the unnamed relative and continued to processing. Sheriff Ingram says Hewett escaped shortly after. The sheriff’s office was notified and the manhunt began.

The search began around 4 p.m. towards the woods outside the government complex in Bolivia.
Roadblocks were set up in a perimeter to check vehicles well into the night.

Hewett is believed to be in the area and Sheriff Ingram ask everyone to be alert and report anything suspicious to 9-1-1.
Make sure doors are locked on cars and homes.
