UPDATE: Police arrest stabbing suspect near WPD headquarters

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A late night stabbing just outside a downtown Wilmington gas station sent one man to the hospital, and landed his accused attacker behind bars.

Police say the crime happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday outside of the Family Fare gas station on the corner of 3rd and Red Cross Streets in Wilmington.

They say Antoine Chapelle James, 42, stabbed Joseph Owen King, 24, multiple times, both in the neck and side. Officers arrested James for the crime at a homeless camp near police headquarters on Bess Street soon after it happened.

According to police, they were able to find the suspect quickly when witnesses described James. They say they recognized and identified James, who was already served an alcohol violation earlier Monday night.

Police say they believe the stabbing comes after an altercation that happened downtown earlier Monday night. James is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He is in the New Hanover County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond.

Police say the victim is expected to be okay.
