Veterans Day aboard Battleship North Carolina

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Veterans Day is a day of giving thanks and honoring those who protect and serve our country and that is exactly what Plantation Village did for its veterans Friday afternoon.

The retirement community hosted a special ceremony aboard the Battleship North Carolina to honor its 87 veterans. 28 of whom are World War II veterans and the others served either in the Korean War or Vietnam War.

Organizer and Executive Director at Plantation Village Zane Bennett says this event is to honor and show respect to those who fought for our country at one time or another.

“It’s interesting to see all of the residents who’ve served in different wars and to see them mingling with the active duty service men and women, that’s really amazing,” Bennett said.

Among the veterans, there were also 25 active duty marines at the event, giving thanks to past generations.

“I think it’s important to remember our veterans and what they’ve sacrificed and given up for this country. It’s up to us as future generations to do the same and inspire those who will be coming ahead of us,” U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Leah Andino said.

Fridays event was Plantation Village’s second annual Veterans Day celebration. Both organizers and residents say they hope the new tradition continues.
