Volunteers needed to help plant salt marsh grass in Holly Ridge

HOLLY RIDGE, NC (WWAY) — If you’re looking for something constructive to do after next week’s July 4th celebrations, there’s a volunteering opportunity to help the environment.

The North Carolina Coastal Federation needs your help.

It’s seeking volunteers of all ages and abilities to plant salt marsh grasses to restore the salt marsh and oyster habitat.

You’ll be working in wet, dry, sandy, and muddy conditions between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on July 5 at the Morris Landing Preserve in Holly Ridge.

“Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve is an excellent demonstration of the benefits of a living shoreline,” said Jessica Gray, coastal outreach associate for the Wrightsville Beach office. “Visitors can learn about the five project phases and the various techniques used to stabilize the shoreline while helping restore critical estuarine habitat.”

Volunteers should dress in comfortable clothes that can get dirty, wear boots or closed-toe shoes that cover the entire foot, bring a water bottle, hat and sunglasses and bring any medication that may be needed while on site.
