West Brunswick Football extends Brunswick County rivalry streak to 12

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — While the rain forced several Cape Fear teams to postpone their games, it didn’t stop all the action on Friday night. Thanks to South Brunswick’s turf field, the West Brunswick Trojans and South Brunswick Cougars were able to play their rivalry matchup – marking Aaron Powell’s first official game as head coach at West Brunswick.

The Trojans entered the night riding an 11-game winning streak in the rivalry, looking to make it an even dozen. But South Brunswick was ready to defend its home turf.

Freshman quarterback Kaelum Grainger got the Cougars on the board first, handing the ball to star running back Amerius Revels, who punched it in for six. The extra point was good, giving South Brunswick a 7-0 lead.

West Brunswick quickly answered. Senior quarterback Josiah Borten handed the ball to Marzell Stanley, who powered through for a Trojan touchdown to tie the game at seven.

In the second quarter, Revels appeared headed for another score, but the ball came loose, and West Brunswick recovered.

The Cougars defense responded with a big play of its own. Linebacker Nate Early came up with a huge sack to force a turnover and give South Brunswick the ball back near the goal line.

This time, Revels finished the job, finding the end zone to put the Cougars back in front, 13-7.

But the Trojans answered once again. Wide receiver Eden Romero hauled in a touchdown to give West Brunswick a 14-13 lead.

The Trojans continued to build their advantage in the second half, with Motashi Lance getting his moment to shine as he ran one in for a touchdown. The extra point was good, making it 21-13.

The fourth quarter was briefly interrupted by a lightning delay, but the Trojans ultimately finished the night on top.

West Brunswick takes the rivalry matchup 41-20, earning its 12th straight win over South Brunswick.
