What’s happening across the Cape fear this weekend
Wilmington, NC (WWAY) — Several events are planned across the Cape Fear this weekend, including a benefit concert, a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, a movie aboard the Battleship North Carolina and an Oktoberfest celebration in Carolina Beach.
Access of Wilmington will host its Sounds of Freedom Benefit Gala Concert from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday at the Brooklyn Arts Center.
Nashville artist Belles will headline the event, with Folkstone String Band opening. The event will also include a silent auction, food and drinks. Proceeds will benefit Project SOAR, which supports veterans with disabilities and first responders.
On Saturday, the Cape Fear Latinos Festival will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Live Oak Bank Pavilion. The free, family-friendly event will run from noon to 6 p.m. and include live music, dancing, children’s activities and food trucks.
A mini-parade is scheduled on Water Street ahead of the festival.
Also Saturday, the Battleship North Carolina will screen the 1945 World War II film “They Were Expendable,” starring John Wayne, as part of its Movies on the Fantail series.
The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for members and $10 for the public.
The weekend concludes with Oktoberfest on the Beach at the Carolina Beach Pier on Sunday. The free event runs from noon to 5 p.m. and will feature live polka music, a pumpkin patch, a stein-holding contest and German food and drinks.
