Whiteville holds off West Brunswick in high-scoring battle, 39-36

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Whiteville and West Brunswick entered Thursday night’s matchup both 1-0, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle between two unbeaten teams.

The Wolfpack came out fast, building an 18-0 lead early in the game. Sophomore receiver Teron Legette scored first, before running back Tylae Rose powered into the end zone for the first of multiple touchdowns on the night.

West Brunswick answered behind quarterback Josiah Borten, who showed his ability to make plays with his legs. Borton scrambled for a few chunk plays, before breaking a big play … shedding multiple tacklers and racing for a long touchdown.

The Trojans continued to make plays offensively, including a highlight-reel touchdown from one of their running backs #16.

With the play appearing to be stopped, the West Brunswick player broke free from three defenders and continued into the end zone to keep the Trojans within striking distance.

Senior running back Marzell Stanley also scored for West Brunswick.

Whiteville responded on defense when Teron Leggette recovered a fumble and turned it into a touchdown, stiff-arming a defender on his way into the end zone.

Leggette also scored twice on offense, giving him three total touchdowns for the night, including the defensive score.

The Trojans continued to battle until the final whistle, but Whiteville held on for the win.

The victory keeps the Wolfpack undefeated, while West Brunswick suffers its first loss of the season.
