Wildlife Resources Commission to hold public meeting on chronic wasting disease
ROCKY MOUNT, NC (WWAY) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will hold a public informational meeting later this month to discuss chronic wasting disease, or CWD, following the disease’s recent confirmation in Edgecombe County.
The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the East Carolina Agricultural & Education Center, located at 1175 Kingsboro Road in Rocky Mount.
According to the commission, Edgecombe County is the latest county in North Carolina where chronic wasting disease has been detected in deer.
Agency officials said the meeting will provide information about new hunting regulations, updated surveillance and management strategies, and changes affecting the upcoming deer season. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions.
The commission said chronic wasting disease has now been confirmed in deer in seven North Carolina counties. The disease spreads among deer populations and can also be spread unintentionally through the improper disposal of deer carcasses.
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal neurological disease that affects members of the deer family, including white-tailed deer, elk and moose. There is no known cure or vaccine, and the disease spreads through direct contact between animals and contaminated environments.
