Williston students look to future at career fair

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Little kids with big dreams got to meet professionals who have the jobs the kids hope to have one day.

Communities in Schools of Cape Fear and UNCW’s Cameron School of Business put together the first ever Williston Middle School Career Fair today.

“It helps me learn when I get the job so I know what to do and how to do it,” student Ahmir Davis said.

Davis said he wants to be a police officer when he grows up, and he was happy to actually meet and talk to one today.

Program coordinator Robin Colbert said the idea is to get kids to start thinking about the future now. The career fair emphasized jobs that specifically relate to math and language arts.

“You’re not going to be able to have a good career in life if you’re not able to comprehend what you read or if you’re not able to do certain math problems and stuff like that,” Colbert said.

WWAY’s Tim Buckley, who uses language arts and math skills every day in his job, was also there to talk to students.
