Wilmington armed hostage situation ends with suspect hospitalized

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department is investigating a hostage situation that ended with the suspect suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound Sunday evening.

Police said officers responded around 7 p.m. to the 500 block of Camway Drive after receiving a report of a possible armed hostage situation.

When officers arrived, they confirmed a suspect was inside a home with two victims.

According to police, the suspect later exited the home with one of the hostages and entered an SUV parked in the driveway. While inside the vehicle, the suspect fired a weapon, suffering what police described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Emergency medical crews, who had been staged nearby, immediately responded and took the suspect to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Police said the suspect was in life-threatening condition when transported.

Both victims were safely rescued.

Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division are leading the investigation. Police said the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no additional information available at this time.
