New Hanover Co. boy’s cabbage wins statewide prize

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County boy has won some “cabbage” for growing a giant cabbage.

Turner Caglarcan, a student at Eaton Elementary, will receive a $1,000 savings bond for his education from Bonnie Plants.

Turner grew a huge cabbage and was randomly selected by the NC Department of Agriculture as the state winner in the National Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program. Contest organizers estimate his cabbage weighs about 35-45 pounds.

The company says this year more than 1.5 million third graders in 48 states took part in the program, which donates O.S. Cross, or “oversized” cabbage plants, to third-grade classrooms.

The 2016 contest is open for free. Teachers can click here for more information.
