Wilmington Fire Department hiring fire engineers, lieutenants

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department is accepting applications for fire engineer and fire lieutenant positions, with an application deadline of Nov. 1.
Both positions require previous fire service experience and operate on a 24-hour shift schedule.
Fire engineers are responsible for operating and maintaining fire apparatus, ensuring equipment is ready for emergency response and serving as second-in-command to company officers.
Fire lieutenants supervise firefighters, oversee emergency operations and handle administrative responsibilities, including reports and operational accountability.
“These positions are essential to maintaining safe, effective emergency operations while preparing the next generation of fire service leaders within the Wilmington Fire Department,” said Derek Mickler, the department’s chief of operations. “It is critical that the department invests in professionals who can meet increasing demands and evolving risks in the community.”
The city offers benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance, access to an employer-paid health and wellness clinic, participation in the North Carolina Local Government Retirement System, paid sick and vacation leave, tuition assistance and professional development opportunities.
Employees also receive 13 paid holidays each year.
The department will hold two required virtual informational sessions for prospective applicants on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27.
Links to the sessions are included in the job postings.
Applications must be submitted by Nov. 1.
Interested candidates can review qualifications and apply through the City of Wilmington’s employment website.
