Wilmington Harbor included in $28.4M regional dredging contract
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Harbor is one of three major Southeastern harbors included in a $28.46 million maintenance dredging contract awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The South Atlantic Division Regional Harbor Dredging Project contract was awarded to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. LLC.
The contract covers maintenance dredging in Wilmington Harbor in North Carolina, along with Savannah Harbor and Brunswick Harbor in Georgia.
The work will involve removing and disposing of sediment that has accumulated in designated navigation channels and turning basins. The goal is to maintain the authorized depths of the federal navigation channels.
According to the Army Corps, maintenance dredging is used to maintain deep-draft navigation and provide safe passage for commercial vessels.
The Wilmington District is responsible for maintaining Wilmington Harbor’s federal navigation channel. The Army Corps says its ongoing operation and maintenance work at the harbor includes dredging, surveying and dredged material management.
The $28.46 million regional contract comes as the Army Corps continues evaluating its long-term approach to operation and maintenance dredging in Wilmington Harbor through an environmental impact statement. That review focuses on maintenance activities and does not consider changes to the harbor’s channel dimensions.
