Wilmington headlines quickly moved on from JFK
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The top story in the Nov. 22, 1963, edition of the Wilmington Morning Star was “JFK Tours Tex., Talks Politics.”
By the afternoon, The Wilmington News ran with the banner headline “KENNEDY SLAIN IN TEX.”
In the days following the assassination, the headlines for the two papers moved from funeral plans, to Oswald slain, to the burial of JFK.
The two papers later combined to form the StarNews. Scott Nunn writes the “Back Then” series in the paper now, where he combs the archives looking for interesting stories of the past and trends in coverage. He says the Wilmington media moved on quickly from the assassination story.
“In a sense the JFK, at least the burial and assasination part, was quickly being put behind,” Nunn said. “That surprised me how quickly the news seemed to be moving along.”
By Nov. 27, 1963, the JFK headlines were replaced by the new president, Lyndon B. Johnson, his plan to address congress and local news.
By the way, WWAY would not hit the air until the fall of 1964.
