WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington, Inc. is hosting a series of community events this June honoring African American history, culture, and freedom, while emphasizing education, civic engagement, and literacy.

Juneteenth, recognized as the oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States, will be observed through a week of programming designed to bring families together and highlight local history and achievement.

For 2026, organizers say the theme centers on civic engagement and literacy, with events intended to encourage reflection, learning, and community connection. All festivities are open to the public, and most are free to attend.

The celebration begins Sunday, June 14 with a Gospel Fest at Shiloh Baptist Church.

On Tuesday, June 16, a remembrance event for the Colored Troops will take place at the Wilmington National Cemetery at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, June 17 will feature an Urban Hike and Community Forum at the MLK Center, offering participants a chance to explore local history and engage in discussion.

Friday, June 19 marks Juneteenth Day with a community breakfast at 9:30 a.m. at the MLK Center.

Saturday, June 20 will include a Juneteenth Music Festival beginning at 1 p.m. at the MLK Center.

The celebration will conclude Sunday, June 28 with the Juneteenth Pageant at 3 p.m., also at the MLK Center.

Organizers encourage residents and visitors to participate in the weeklong observance to honor the legacy of Juneteenth and celebrate the ongoing contributions of the African American community in Wilmington and beyond.
