Wilmington man dies in Pender County crash

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Driver fatigue may have caused a fatal accident in Pender County early Monday morning.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-40 slightly east of the Highway 53 exit for Burgaw.

Trooper A. J. Knoerzer said Oscar Rameriz, 23, of Wilmington, was driving a 2007 Pontiac Solstice. His girlfriend, Amy Yepez, 24, also of Wilmington, was a passenger in the car.

The highway patrol says Rameriz ran off the road and into a ditch before striking a tree.

He died at the scene. Yepez suffered non life-threatening injuries and was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Yepez told the trooper she fell asleep prior to the crash but she was unsure if Rameriz dozed off before the car ran off the highway.

The highway patrol said wet road conditions may have contributed to the accident. Speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Knoerzer said.
