Wilmington Municipal Golf Course celebrates 100 years with tournament and new landmark

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Municipal Golf Course is celebrating a century of history — along with a recent national honor — with a special tournament and a new landmark.

The course celebrated its 100th anniversary this weekend with a tournament and the unveiling of a new 16-foot-tall clock.

The clock was purchased with money raised by Friends of Muni, a group that has supported improvements at the course since 2015.

Chairwoman Louise McColl said the clock is unique to Wilmington, featuring four clock faces rather than the two found on similar clocks at Pinehurst.

“We got the four-sided faces instead of two, like in Pinehurst,” McColl said. “But it’s 16 feet tall. So, it’s a tall clock.”

McColl said the clock is the only one of its kind displayed at a municipal property in Wilmington.

The course was also recently ranked the 10th-best municipal golf course in the country.

Friends of Muni are already looking ahead, with a glow golf tournament planned for November.
