WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–As Memorial Day weekend begins, many people are preparing to enjoy the three-day holiday weekend, but the day also serves as a time to honor and remember those who died while serving in the U.S. military.

At the Wilmington National Cemetery, more than 5,000 small American flags have been placed on veterans’ graves ahead of the holiday in tribute to those who served the country.

A Memorial Day ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Wilmington National Cemetery on May 24 at 11 a.m.
