Wilmington PD: 12 protesters cited or arrested since June 2

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Since June 2, Wilmington police say they have cited and/or arrested a dozen protesters.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wilmington Police Departments says they began receiving calls that protesters were blocking the intersection of 3rd and Princess Street by standing in the crosswalk when the light was green, turning around and walking in the other direction to prevent cars from turning, and walking slowly across the road.

WPD says officers spoke with them and asked them to please not block the road.

Around 9 p.m., officers received calls that the protesters were blocking the same intersection again.

Four people were cited Tuesday night for impeding traffic:

“This agency is committed to protecting and honoring citizens’ first amendment rights, and we’ve done that since these protests began on May 31,” Police Chief Donny Williams wrote in a news release. “However, when protesters blatantly disregard the law and put our community and our officers at risk, they will be dealt with.”

This list does not include arrests made by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
