Wilmington police charge parents of teen driver following fatal June collision

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The parents of a 15-year-old accused of driving 79 mph before a fatal June crash in Wilmington are now facing charges, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Police announced Wednesday that both parents of the juvenile driver have been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle.

The charges stem from a two-vehicle crash that happened just before 11:15 p.m. June 16 at the intersection of Military Cutoff Road and Station Road.

Police said Marina Smyrnow was driving a Lexus and attempting to turn left when her vehicle was struck by a Chevrolet Colorado traveling west on Military Cutoff Road.

Both vehicles were significantly damaged, and Smyrnow suffered serious injuries. Police said she later died from those injuries.

Investigators said the Chevrolet Colorado was being driven by a 15-year-old who did not have a driver’s license. Police allege the teenager was traveling 79 mph in a 45 mph zone.

The juvenile has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless operation resulting in serious injury, speeding and no operator’s license.

Police did not identify the juvenile or the parents.

Toxicology results for both drivers are still pending as investigators work to determine whether impairment was a factor, according to WPD.
