Wilmington Police Department transitioning to red and blue emergency lights

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department is transitioning its patrol vehicle fleet to red and blue emergency lighting over the next several months.

The department says the change is intended to improve the visibility and recognition of law enforcement vehicles, helping enhance safety for officers and the public.

WPD patrol vehicles currently feature an all-blue light bar.

The first vehicles to receive the new system will be unmarked patrol vehicles

Research cited by WPD indicates red lighting is more visible during the day, while blue lighting is more visible at night.

“The safety of our officers and the community is always our highest priority,” Wilmington Police Chief Ryan Zuidema said. “Transitioning to red and blue emergency lighting enhances the visibility and immediate recognition of our patrol vehicles, helping drivers identify law enforcement more quickly and respond appropriately by shifting lanes.”

The department says the lighting change is part of its broader effort to modernize operations through technology.

In recent years, WPD has also expanded its use of tools including unmanned aircraft systems, or drones, and virtual response training technology as part of its efforts to improve officer preparedness and public safety.
