Wilmington police, fire crews rescue person from Cape Fear River at Isabel Holmes Bridge

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington police and fire personnel rescued a person from the Cape Fear River on Sunday evening after the individual jumped from the Isabel Holmes Bridge, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department.

Officers responded to the bridge around 5:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a person in crisis, the release said. While officers were attempting to speak with the individual, the person jumped from the bridge into the river.

Officers maintained visual contact and coordinated a water rescue with the Wilmington Fire Department, which responded by boat. WPD officers joined fire personnel in locating and rescuing the individual, and a nearby citizen’s boat also assisted in the effort, according to police.

The individual was pulled from the water and transported by EMS to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, police said.

The Wilmington Police Department credited the coordinated response of its officers, fire department personnel, EMS crews and the citizens who assisted in the rescue.
