Wilmington police, New Hanover County deputies investigating two deaths

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a pair of afternoon deaths.

Wilmington police were on the scene of a suspicious death at an apartment on Dapple Court Monday. A spokeswoman says the 911 call came in just before 3 p.m. When they arrived, officers found a 23-year-old white female dead inside an apartment at Hawthorne at New Centre.

Right now there is no word on the cause of death. WWAY spoke to several people who live in the apartment complex about the incident.

“It’s just unnerving. It’s uncomfortable to know that something like that could happen so close to you,” Neighbor Leah Kracke said. “Like where you sleep and where you stay at night. And there are kids in our building and all over the neighborhood, it’s kind of like a family neighborhood too. It’s just unsettling.”

Another resident, Robert Dahms says this apartment complex is usually quite.

“It’s a little nerve-wracking,” Dahms said. “I mean they’re not really saying what the actual cause is so I mean I don’t know if that means it’s a break-in or they knew each other or what. But I mean I’d prefer not to have my dogs harmed, prefer not to have my girlfriend harmed. You know anything like that.”

Meanwhile, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating a black man’s death at Shooter’s Choice on Gordon Rd. Investigators say that death appears to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When asked whether these two deaths are related, Wilmington Police spokeswoman Linda Rawley said she could not confirm that. NHSO spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer said it was too early to know.
