Wilmington Pride Youth Group offers safe space for LGBTQ teens and allies
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Brad Caison of WPYG says the purpose is to “show these kids there are friends, allies and role models for them in the Cape Fear.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, LGBTQIA youth are disproportionately bullied and more likely to attempt suicide. That is why Caison says “these kids need a safe place to gather and talk about what they are experiencing.”
Caison says the weekly gatherings are not therapy, but do provide forums for discussion. Attendees can expect fellowship, activities, movies, speakers and a chance to be themselves.
The group meets weekly and is for teens 13 to 18 years old. There are more than 20 kids involved in the program which is run by volunteers.
Meeting locations are not announced to the public for the safety of the kids, but it is easy to join and find out.
