Wilmington Symphony names Roy Robuck as new youth orchestra conductor
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of Roy Robuck as conductor of the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra, beginning with the 2026-2027 season.
Robuck is an orchestra teacher at E.A. Laney High School and Emma B. Trask Middle School in Wilmington. He has taught orchestra in the area since 1997 and has spent decades working with student musicians across southeastern North Carolina.
According to the symphony, Robuck has also been a member of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra since 1980, performing under each of the organization’s music directors during that time.
The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra serves middle and high school musicians from across the Cape Fear region, providing opportunities to rehearse and perform orchestral music while developing performance skills.
In announcing the appointment, Music Director Peter Askim said Robuck’s experience as both an educator and longtime member of the orchestra made him well suited to lead the youth ensemble.
Robuck said he looks forward to helping young musicians continue to grow as performers and fostering a lasting appreciation for music through the program. “I look forward to working with these talented musicians, helping them grow as performers, and creating meaningful orchestra experiences that inspire a lifelong love of music participation” said Robuck.
The orchestra also recognized outgoing Youth Orchestra conductor Linda Estep for her leadership over the past three seasons. The symphony said Estep helped expand educational opportunities and musical experiences for student musicians during her tenure.
Founded in 1971, the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra presents concerts and educational programs throughout the Cape Fear region and serves thousands of students each year through its music education and outreach initiatives.
