Wilmington teen summit creates space for mental health, support and connection

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With many teenagers facing pressures at home, at school and in their communities, one local organization is working to give young people a place to connect, find resources and feel supported.
Better Is Possible CDC hosted its annual Teen Summit on Saturday at the MLK Center in Wilmington. Dozens of teenagers attended the event, which featured speakers, games, activities and opportunities to connect with community resources.
Organizers say the summit is designed to give young people a safe space to talk, learn and build relationships with people who can support them.
Brandon Hickman, founder of Better Is Possible CDC, said many teens over the years have faced issues including gun violence, drugs and poverty.
But Hickman said the conversations he is hearing from young people are changing.
“This is the first time we are hearing teens talk about mental health, mental wellness, having food in their homes. It’s kind of changed from early pregnancy, violence, to now: ‘I know about mental health. How do I talk to someone? How do I get through this? How do I get through grief?’” Hickman said.
The organization plans to continue those conversations through a new program called “Successful Saturdays.”
Hickman said the program will feature workshops for young people and is expected to take place at least once a month.
