Wilmington to hold final free mulch giveaway of 2026 on Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington residents looking for free mulch have one final opportunity this year as the city’s Free Mulch Friday program returns on Oct. 30.
The City of Wilmington will distribute free mulch at the overflow parking lot behind Legion Stadium, located at 2149 Carolina Beach Road.
The giveaway begins at 8 a.m. Friday and will continue until 2 p.m. or until supplies run out.
City officials say this will be the final mulch giveaway of 2026, with no events scheduled for November or December.
The program distributes excess wood chips generated through the city’s urban forestry operations to area residents.
Mulch will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and participants must load the materials themselves.
No loading assistance or equipment will be provided, and commercial vehicles, including dump trucks and marked commercial trucks or trailers, are prohibited.
A limited supply of partially decayed stump grindings, consisting of wood shavings and soil, will also be available. Those materials must also be loaded by hand.
The giveaway is open to all area residents, regardless of whether they live within Wilmington city limits.
Traffic and parking information
Drivers should enter the overflow lot from West Lake Shore Drive using a right turn only.
Vehicles may be directed to line up toward Stadium Drive if necessary, and city staff will be on-site to help manage traffic.
Officials say the event may be suspended or stopped at any time because of limited supplies or safety concerns.
The city also notes that the quality and composition of the mulch and other materials are not guaranteed.
