Wilmington vigil held for Florida shooting victims

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several people took part in a candlelight vigil in downtown Wilmington remembering the 17 victims of a mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

The Peace Vigil Against Gun Violence started at 6 p.m. Thursday outside Wilmington City Hall.

Organizers said the purpose of the vigil was to join hands, hearts and minds in memory of lost lives while searching for a solution to these continuing tragedies.

“It’s not normal for a teacher to have to barricade a door,” Lynn Shoemaker from Women Organizing for Wilmington said. “Our classrooms are supposed to be havens for learning.”

In Parkland, Florida a massive crowd gathered at an evening vigil trying to find comfort, their candles lighting the way.

It was just one of several vigils held Thursday.
