Wilmington woman arrested following firearm investigation

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington woman is in custody following an investigation into a reported firearm discharge on Chestnut Street, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Officers responded around 9:53 p.m. Wednesday to the 700 block of Chestnut Street after receiving reports of a resident discharging a firearm.

Following an investigation, police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Mekenzie Keese of Wilmington.

On Thursday at approximately 3:10 p.m., members of the Wilmington Police Department’s Gun Crimes Unit, K-9 Unit, and Task Force Officers served an outstanding warrant on Chestnut Street. Authorities said Keese was taken into custody without incident.

During the operation, investigators recovered a firearm and seized narcotics.

Keese faces several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm within an enclosure, possession of marijuana paraphernalia, felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance, and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance.

She was transported to the New Hanover County Detention Facility and is being held without bond.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the reported firearm discharge.
