Wilmington awarded Fit Community title

WILMINGTON — Have you ever wondered what those Fit Community signs were all about when you drove into Wilmington? Well, we found out.

The state has awarded Wilmington the title of a Fit Community based on the City’s amount of healthy lifestyle options.

For instance, Wilmington has many parks for people to be active. The City also has several programs encouraging healthy life styles, such as the senior center and the healthy dining program.

The “Fit Community” title does more than raise fitness awareness.

Community Services Director Gary Shell said, “It’s good because it represents our quality of life and many organizations and corporations that look at the communities when they want to relocate they look for the quality of life-type issues.”

Wilmington is one of only nine cities in the state given the Fit City title.
