Crews work on Wilmington sewer repair

WILMINGTON — Repairs on one section of the troubled northeast interceptor sewer line wrapped up Wednesday.

The city replaced more than a mile of pipe that ran through Hewlett’s Creek.

Wednesday afternoon city crews successfully diverted the sewer flow from the old pipe to the new replacement pipe.

The new pipe can handle at least 50 percent more flow than the old pipe.

Mayor Bill Saffo says he hopes it is the start of some important changes.

There are still two other projects in Wilmington to improve the sewer system. One is replacing sewer pipes along Greenville Loop Road. The other is installing large pumps at Hewlett’s Creek pump station.
