Woman charged with murder in 2017 child death

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — A woman charged with the murder of her young child made her first court appearance this morning in Pender County.

“After an extensive investigation surrounding the death of two-year-old Keith Stephens Jr., his mother Quinisha Fennell was arrested last night and charged with second degree murder and felony child abuse,” Burgaw police chief Jim Hock said.

On December 11, 2017 officers with the Burgaw police department stopped a man holding a child in his arms as he traveled down Progress Drive. Officers performed CPR and rushed the child to the hospital, but he did not survive.

“An arrest is a start of an investigation, not the end. We still call upon the community for any support that they can give, any information that they might provide. They should reach out to the Burgaw police department.”

Following the arrest, Pender County district attorney Ben David says he is proud of the long hours put in by the investigators.

“I want to compliment these investigators for their hard work until now,” David said. “I know that there’s a lot of hard work. Nothing is more important than solving a murder case, particularly one involving a young child.”

David added that it takes the entire force working together to solve a case like this one.

“It truly represents the best in what we do when we embrace a police prosecutor team approach,” David continued. “We will again stop at nothing to get justice for our children here in Pender County.”

Fennell is being held on a 750,000 dollar bond at the Pender County detention center. Her next court appearance is set for March 10th.
