Woman stands alone in community clean-up

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One Wilmington woman is on a mission to clean up the streets. Lola James is a lady who knows that big changes start with small steps.

“If you don’t care, then who cares, right?” James said. “It’s everybody’s responsibility to care.”

Lola James cares a lot about the community she’s spent her whole life in, and she just wants to see it clean.

James is trying to start a program to pick up litter in her neighborhood around Maides Park. She invited everyone to help her Saturday morning. She’s the only one who showed up, but said she’s not discouraged, and she knows it only takes one person to start a domino effect for change.

“I think sometimes we get apathy, because it’s like, well, somebody else will pick it up,” James said. “You know, we always want somebody else to do the job, but sometimes it takes us doing the job.”

James said her neighborhood often has negative stereotypes, but she thinks cleaning up the trash will help clean up some of the other problems like drugs, alcohol and gangs. She has big ideas for huge changes in her community and the park in it. But she’s learning there are a lot of obstacles to overcome and wants our local government to pay more attention.

“If you’re putting bike trails on one side of town, then you need to put them on the other side of town,” she said. “If you’re going to have recreational things for one park, then you gotta have the same things for the other parks. You gotta be fair and just. You can’t skip over one side of town to another.”

James wants better for herself and her community and said you have to live better than being satisfied with garbage.
