Workers search for summer jobs

CONSUMER WATCH — Summer isn’t just about vacation. Work goes on and for many, so does the search for a new job.

What are your chances of landing a job during the summer?

While the warm days of summer leave many dreaming of beach vacations, others may use the next few months looking for a new job.

But with the unemployment rate hovering at low 4.5 percent, jobs seekers would be right to wonder if employers are hiring.

According to a new survey, they are.

Employment services company manpower released its quarterly employment outlook survey today and found that 29 percent of employers plan to hire new employees from July through September.

That’s an improvement from the first three months of the year when only 23 percent said they planned on hiring.

But it’s not all good news. Of the 14,000 companies surveyed, seven percent plan to cut their payrolls.

Job seekers in the west will have better luck finding a job.

And if you work in construction, you have the best chance of finding a job with the largest gains expected in that sector.

And perhaps not surprising in the summer, educators will face a tougher time keeping their jobs. Eleven percent of teaching employers said they plan to reduce their workforce.
