WPD officers reach out to needy kids through Santa Cop

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police officers showed less fortunate kids a very merry Christmas during the department’s 22nd Annual Santa Cop this morning.

Kids kicked off a $100 shopping spree at the Walmart on Sigmon Road with breakfast and a visit from Santa. Then, the children paired up with officers and shopped.

Officers say Santa Cop gives back to the community, and allows people to learn more about them.

“I have been doing this probably about 10 years now,” Cpl. Leslie Irving said. “It is a joy to just come in and walk around with the children, and help them pick out what they want. And it is just a joy for the children to see another side of the police officers.”

The Santa Cop program is funded by the generous donations of local individuals, businesses, and organizations. The program is always accepting donations.
