Wrightsville Beach Heroes honored for saving UNCW coach’s life

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A group of everyday heroes was honored Friday for their actions that helped save the life of Nicole Woods after a near-drowning at Wrightsville Beach.
The Cape Fear Rotary Club recognized bystanders, rescuers and first responders who rushed to help after Woods was caught in a rip current in May.
Woods entered the ocean after a wave knocked her nephew down. Both were pulled into the current, and Woods was later rescued from the water unconscious and without a pulse.
Ryan Gillespie was one of the bystanders who ran into the water to help. “We didn’t even think,” Gillespie said. “I remember scanning the beach for something that would float and not seeing anything. We’re like, we got to go.”
Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Director Sam Proffit said rescuers relied on their training when they arrived. “You just kind of go back to your training. It’s what we’re trained to do,” Proffit said.
The Cape Fear Rotary Club said the recognition was about honoring people who put others before themselves.
“They put their life on the line to help save her,” said Jason Ezzell, Cape Fear Rotary Club president.
Woods was unable to attend the ceremony but sent a message thanking those who saved her life.
“I’m eternally grateful to you all. You’re stuck with me for life,” Woods said.
