Hit and run driver kills junior at Topsail High

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Highway Patrol is looking for a driver they say killed a teen who was riding a foot scooter in a hit and run on Highway 17 Wednesday.

First Sgt. King with the Highway Patrol said they got the call around 6 a.m. on Highway 17 near Sloop Point Road. King said Tomas Hall Green, 17, of Hampstead, died while riding a foot scooter. He said the vehicle left the scene. He needs the public’s help finding it.

King said there was some debris at the scene. He said they found the front left part of the grill on the vehicle. He said they have identified it as a 2001-2006 Chevy SUV or pickup truck. Anyone with information is asked to call the Highway Patrol.

A Pender County Schools spokeswoman said Green was a junior at Topsail High School. According to a GoFundMe page started by a friend, Green’s mother is a single mom and Green was one of two boys.

As students, faculty and family mourned his death, people in the stands and players on the field took time out of a softball game Wednesday night to hold a moment of silence for the teen.
