112 lb. catfish (Photo: Riahn Brewington)

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man from New Hanover County caught a 112 pound catfish in the NE Cape Fear River.

Riahn Brewington was just five pounds shy of breaking the state record for a catfish. Brewington said he went fishing the day before Thanksgiving in his spot on the Cape Fear River.

Brewington took several pictures including laying next to the big fish. He said he has never caught anything this big. He also said he was not using a big rod or reel and only had 10 lb. test line on his rod.

“In the water, it felt like it was pretty big, but like I said being that big I thought it would have already snapped the line, but I didn’t realize how big he was until I actually got my hands underneath him,” Brewington said.

Brewington did not want to give away his spot, but he says he caught and released the catfish in the northeast part of the Cape Fear River.

nice catch and a record, too. how long was the fight? I think I know near where you might have caught him….above Wilmington.

only on 3 means the fight was only 3 minutes. Cold in the water now. That make them more slugglish and less fighting?

  • Did he put it back?

    • If you would just READ!!!

If you just READ there’s nothing to say he released the fish. Some people turn their volume off while on the computer which is where you’d find out he released it.

Looks like you are wrong yet again.
From the last sentence in the story: “Brewington did not want to give away his spot, but he says he caught and RELEASED the catfish in the northeast part of the Cape Fear River.”

      • He killed it with his Gun.
