North Carolina's gas tax will increase 2.5 cents to 35 cents per gallon starting July 1. NC drivers now pay a combined state and federal gas tax of 51.2 cents per gallon. That's one of the highest rates in the nation, and the second highest in the Southeast, according to the American Petroleum Institute.

Even as oil prices drop, Gas prices continue to climb. The national average is now $3.97 a gallon for regular unleaded. In many places across the country the price has already passed four dollars. Here in our area it's getting close.

Gas prices spiked again overnight, reaching $3.55 a gallon in many places around the city.
According to GasBuddy.com, the cheapest gas around town is $3.42 at the Sam's Club. It's $3.43 at Dodge's Store at 5224 Market Street, at the Hess at 6234 Carolina Beach Road and at the Hess at 7413 Market Street.
